Backpacks with a logo: embroidery or print – which suits which model?
Embroidery or print on a backpack? We show which spot can be decorated, what polyester, canvas and waterproof fabrics can take, and how to find the right method.
Embroidery or print: what is different on a backpack
On a backpack, three things decide the method: your logo, the material and the spot where the logo should sit. Unlike a T-shirt, a backpack is already sewn together, often lined and padded in many places. That determines where an embroidery machine can reach at all. With print, the question is rather whether the surface is smooth enough and fits flat into the press.
If you already know you want embroidery, you will find suitable models in our collection of backpacks embroidered with your logo. For everyone else, here is the direct comparison:
| Criterion | Thread, firmly stitched Embroidery | Pressed on Print |
|---|---|---|
| Look | Textured, slightly raised, looks high-quality | Flat and colourful, photos possible too |
| Colours | Up to 3 thread colours, clear shapes | Many colours, gradients, fine details |
| Area | Must fit under the needle on its own, usually the front pocket | Smooth area that fits flat into the press |
| Waterproof fabrics | Needle holes can make the coating leak | No punctures in the coating |
| Typical for | Company backpacks for your team, lettering | Promotions, colourful logos, roll-top models |
Which part of a backpack can be decorated
For embroidery, we clamp the fabric in an embroidery hoop. The needle may only go through the layer the logo is meant to sit on. If it catches the lining or an inner pocket, it sews the backpack shut at that point. That is why the front pocket is almost always the best spot on a finished backpack: it has its own layer of fabric and is clearly visible in everyday use.
Some models in our shop are built exactly for this. The BagBase Vintage Laptop Backpack has an EasyPocket for decoration. The Quadra Heritage Waxed Canvas Backpack has a hidden zip in the lining that gives access to the area. And on the BagBase Recycled Twin Handle Roll-Top, the manufacturer says the front pocket is easy to decorate.
Front pocket
Its own layer of fabric, easy to reach, clearly visible
Area with access through the lining
The needle only hits the outer layer
Padded back
Sits against the body, and padding cannot be clamped flat
Top edge of a roll-top
Gets rolled up when closed – the logo belongs below the roll
Material: what polyester, canvas and others can take
Figures such as “600D” or “300D” in the product data refer to the yarn thickness (denier). The higher the number, the thicker and tougher the fabric. Both qualities can be embroidered and printed. Coated, waxed or leather-look fabrics are trickier. Here is an overview with models from our range:
| Material | Example from the shop | Embroidery | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Polyester 600D | BagBase Original Fashion Backpack, Universal Backpack | Well suited | Well suited |
| Recycled polyester | BagBase Recycled Backpack (600D), Recycled Twin Handle Roll-Top (300D) | Well suited | Well suited |
| Organic cotton canvas, 340 g/m² | Westford Mill EarthAware Organic Mini Backpack | Very well suited | Suitable |
| Waxed cotton canvas | Quadra Heritage Waxed Canvas Backpack | Via the zip in the lining | We check the wax layer first |
| Leather-look PU, PVC tarpaulin | BagBase Boutique Backpack, BagBase Tarp Roll-Top | Not recommended: needle holes stay visible | After testing |
| Polyester with waterproof coating | Quadra Waterproof Roll-Top | Not recommended: needle holes go through the coating | Transfer print |
The fabric colour plays a part too. On dark backpacks we put a white base layer under the colours when printing so they stay strong. With embroidery, you choose thread colours that stand out clearly from the fabric.

Embroidery on a backpack: what your logo should bring
Embroidery is made up of many individual stitches. We turn clear shapes, lettering and logos with up to 3 thread colours into clean embroidery. Very thin lines and tiny lettering lose sharpness in thread. In that case we enlarge the logo slightly or simplify details – together with you in the free layout consultation.
We create the embroidery file for you, and it is included. You send us your logo, ideally as a vector file. How we embroider and which other garments are suitable is explained on our page embroidering textiles with your logo.

From the workshop
Lettering in a contrast colour
The photo shows an embroidered lettering logo in pink on a brown backpack. It shows two things: lettering works well in embroidery when the letters are not too fine. And a thread colour with clear contrast to the fabric makes the logo readable from a distance.
When print is better on a backpack
For printing on backpacks we usually use DTF. The design is printed digitally onto a film and pressed onto the fabric with heat and pressure. Because no screens are needed, the number of colours does not matter: gradients, photos and fine lines come out cleanly.
Print is also the right choice when the backpack needs to stay waterproof. On the Quadra Waterproof Roll-Top, made of recycled polyester with a waterproof coating, the logo therefore goes on by transfer printing. The same rule applies here: the area must be smooth and fit flat into the press, so the front pocket or a smooth front, not the padded back.
Give colours as values
A Pantone or HKS value helps us with printing and with choosing the right thread colour.
Enough pixels
For print, a high-resolution PNG is enough. For embroidery, a vector file is ideal.
Embroidery or print? Typical cases
The quickest way to decide is by use and logo. These cases help you sort it out:
Backpacks for your team, company logo in one to three colours, used every day.
Embroidery
Your logo has many colours or a gradient.
Print
A waterproof roll-top backpack for field staff.
Print
Children’s backpacks for a nursery or school with clear lettering.
Embroidery
A photo or a detailed illustration for a campaign.
Print
Often the best answer
Combine both
Embroidery for your team’s backpacks, print for the promotion – from the same logo artwork.
Embroidery + print
If you are planning backpacks as a promotional gift, take a look at our guide to textile promotional products with your logo. If a light bag will do, our post on printing gym sacks will help.

Backpacks with a logo: frequently asked questions
Can any backpack be embroidered?
No. What matters is whether the area fits under the needle on its own. On most models that is the front pocket. For padded areas, PU, PVC and waterproof fabrics we recommend print.
How many colours can my embroidered logo have?
Up to 3 thread colours. If your logo has more colours or gradients, print is usually the better choice.
Can I have my own backpack embroidered?
In principle, yes. We check beforehand whether the spot you want can be reached. More on our page about embroidering your own garments.
Can I wash backpacks with a logo?
According to the manufacturers, most backpacks in our range are not meant for the washing machine. It is best to remove stains carefully from the outside.
Will I see what the logo looks like on the backpack beforehand?
Yes. Before production you receive a print approval with position, size and colours, which you approve.
Not sure whether your backpack should be embroidered or printed? Send us your enquiry – we’ll get back to you with a recommendation.
